American Bar Series by Carl B. Johnson
The American Bar Series was borne out of an excuse to justify
spending way too much time at the local pub. It seems anymore
that I am spending way more time painting than at the pub. I guess
that is a good thing.
The American Bar Series began with an acrylic painting of a local
bar, The Frosted Mug. It was a departure from landscapes
and local street scenes that until then had been my primary focus.
That began a journey that lasts to this day, capturing the atmosphere
of a pub. I began furiously painting the local dives in South
Jersey. The more recent works are of Key West and New Orleans
bars.
My style has evolved, as have the works. I now work in oils,
and many of the newest paintings are 8"x10". Almost
all of these paintings reside in private collections. However,
a majority of them have been compiled in a book,
Bar Exam, that I published a year ago.
These paintings are completed in the studio, as it would be nearly
impossible to paint in a crowded, or not-so-crowded bar.
