The Vortex
Graphic Design
by Carl B. Johnson

I love painting, and I cannot imagine ever not painting. But painting can sometimes feel like work. Iput pressure on myself to complete more, and it becomes a chore. A fun chore, but work nonetheless.

Assemblage is fun, and another creative outlet. It allows me to be creative without feeling like I am working.

Mosaic murals are fun, but they ARE work. Of course, the public projects are where I make the most income in the shortest time as an artist.

Graphic Design (computer illlustration, web design and desktop publishing fall within my definition of this category) is yet another avenue to exercise my creativity, and earn an income.

About the images:
First, the logo at the top of the page - the Vortex. The original Wuli.com website was an evolution, designed with the Netscape Navigator web utility. I am completely self-taught - having only a couple classes in design. The Vortex was one of the original logos for the site, and was used right up until I converted the website over to the Wordpress blog format. The site always was a sort of blog, long before there was such a thing as a blog.

On to the images - I was asked by AHOME to create a tee-shirt design for the Heart of Millville 5K run. I utilized their existing heart logo in a playful way to create a colorful graphic. I can't wait to get my own tee-shirt of this one!

The Greater Millville Ministerial Association asked me to come up with a design for the Adopt-A-Block program. This program is one that is very close to my heart. As Chair of the Center City Neighborhood Group I have been trying for a couple years to implement such a program, a program that involves the residents of the neighborhoods.

"Got a Light?" This was just an experiment merging several different photographs into one image in Photoshop. Sometimes I have to push myself to learn more, because the program is so powerful, and so flexible - but you have to know how to use it.

For the Mosaic Mural business, Independent Artist Studios (IAS), I needed to design a cohesive and recognizable design that would be implemented on our business cards, brochures, website, print advertisements and carried over into ny promotional material that we hand out. It had to be colorful, graphically strong, and easy to reproduce.

The two book covers - actually I have done many book covers beginning with cover designs for the Bellco Glass Catalogs. For the Mosaic Mural book that Liz Nicklus and I collaborated on, I used an element of the IAS design combined with a mosaic that we created.

For the Inferno book, I wanted to brown bag it! Both of these books are available on Amazon.com.
